Process Paper.
How I Chose My Topic:
I chose my topic after hearing the story of Kate Degrew, a women killed by her Crinoline skirts. After I began researching more, I became fascinated with the many different styles of dresses, and the extended lengths that women went to in order to alter their natural forms. The civil war era was also was the first time ever that pants had been worn by women, and changed fashion for other generations to come. The Civil War Era was a time of great change for fashion.
How I Conducted My Research :
I researched a lot of information online. However, I did check out many books on the civil war, however, to better understand how the lifestyle of women would be during the civil war. I also looked at many dresses that were on the Smithsonian Museum website. Along with that I talked to seamstresses that sew Civil War dresses for a living, and the most important details in doing so. I took notes over almost everything I could and compared them to come up with the most common facts and stories. Because there were so many different dresses and clothing pieces of the civil war, I did have to narrow the information down to much less than what I started with.
How I Selected My Presentation Category and Created Your Project:
I chose a website because I felt that it was the best way to show the important images of the Civil War dresses, as well as organize the information. Obviously, pictures and visuals of the dresses were going to be a huge part of my project, and I wanted to provide many examples of the dresses. I also decided that a website would be best because I could organize the categories very distinctively. There are many different types of dresses and layers f clothing that can easily be mixed up and hard to keep track of. So, by having the opportunity to separate the clothing into different categories the information could be more distinct and easier to keep track of. I created my project on weebly, as recommended on the National History Day website. Many of the dresses I used as images came off of the Smithsonian Museum website. I decided to focus on the main fashion trends of the 1800’s. I also wanted to give interesting information that wasn’t so classic. For example “Deadly Fashion” and “Modern Takes on Old Fashion”.
How My Project Relates to the NHD Theme:
My project relates to the National History Day theme because my project is over women’s clothing during the civil war. Obviously, my topic relates to the NHD theme of the Civil War because it is all about women and fashion during that time period. My project also relates to the NHD theme because the Civil War changed women's fashion and was a turning point for future fashion. ygh
